Almost Famous - Leeds

Almost Famous is a burger joint I've been meaning to try for ages. It has a casual bar feel, it looks a bit like after 10pm tables are shoved in a corner somewhere and it might become a nightclub at a moment's notice.

Because of this I had low expectations when we first arrived. In the large dining area we were sat next to one of the only other occupied tables by a friendly server, and given menus, as well as a roll of kitchen cloth that hinted the meal would be a messy affair. Graffiti artwork covers the walls, with Disney characters, and a dog holding a cartoon gun up to a rubber duck, it felt whimiscal and offbeat which I liked. The atmosphere was great, there was good early naughties music playing.

I ordered a Brooklyn lager, which came on draught, a "River Phoenix", (Double cheeseburger, bacon, shoestring onions, frazzles, red chilies, redneck BBQ, bacon mayo, bacon ketchup) and "Phoenix Fries" (bacon rain, JD maple glaze, shoestring onions, frazzle dust, chillies, bacon bacon mayo, redneck BBQ), which was all very nice. Okay, the fries were divine, sticky, no scrimping on the extras, it tasted sinful and flavourful, but I was disappointed with the burger.

The flavours complimented one another, but I felt like it held back a little. It was very greasy, there was hardly any bacon and the maple glaze overpowered the whole thing. Shoestring onions are, I discovered, fried onions that were overcooked and soggy, I didn't notice the chilies, nor the bacon mayo or ketchup. Not a bad meal, just a little tamer than I was expecting. Gone are the days where you could get a burger that would fill you up for days, the type where you feel guilty just ordering something that could be considered to be a coronary on a plate.

The whole meal was also inexplicably served in red plastic baskets, which I hated, it felt cheap and nasty. I'd expect this kind of thing perhaps at a burger van or high-street chicken shop, but not in a restaurant.

6/10
